Bring Back Rent Control!

To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:

WHEREAS The Ford government cancelled rent control on units built after November 2018.

WHEREAS The cost to rent a home has never been higher.

WHEREAS People are being forced to leave their communities because decent, affordable homes are
increasingly out of reach.

WHEREAS The Rent Stabilization Act, 2025 will ensure tenants are not gouged on rent each year.

Therefore we the undersigned, petition the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to:

  • Immediately introducing real rent control, also known as vacancy control, so rent control applies to the rental, and not just the tenancy. This will remove the incentive of unethical landlords to use bad faith evictions and renovictions to squeeze out existing tenants so they can charge a higher rent to the next tenant.
