To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
WHEREAS some rent-controlled buildings are being demolished not because they are in disrepair, but rather because they can be replaced with more profitable housing units;
WHEREAS for every new unit of affordable housing built in Ottawa, 31 are being lost due to rising rents, renovations or demolition;
WHEREAS without real rent and vacancy controls, tenants that are renovicted or demovicted are forced to find housing significantly more expensive than the units they are vacating;
WHEREAS demolishing purpose built rentals displaces renters who have nowhere else to go, who are then forced to compete for housing in an already tight rental market, which impacts affordability for everybody.
