Hot Days, Cool Homes

Summers are getting warmer, and, for thousands of renters across Ontario, going home doesn’t mean cooling off. It means trying to sleep in an apartment that’s 30°C, 35°C, sometimes even hotter.

Every year, people get sick — and some die — during extreme heat events. Seniors, people with disabilities, low-income tenants, and people living alone are especially at risk. Research from the University of Ottawa shows health risks start increasing when indoor temperatures rise above 26°C.

That’s why Ontario NDP MPP Catherine McKenney introduced Bill 128: the Hot Days, Cool Homes Act.

Bill 128:

✅ Makes cooling a vital service.
✅ Requires rental homes to stay below 26°C from June 1 to September 30.
✅ Gives renters the same protection from extreme heat that they already have from extreme cold.
