MCKENNEY: It’s time to get Ontario out of last place on housing

QUEEN’S PARK – Following the government’s announcement to cut HST for every home buyer effective April this year until March next year, NDP Shadow Minister for Housing Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) released the following statement:

“Housing is a basic necessity, and we should be looking at every tool to lower costs,” said Catherine McKenney. “But we have to be honest about what this does and who it helps. We have seen time and again that tax cuts alone do not guarantee affordability.

“If this government is serious about solving the housing crisis and building a truly sustainable economy, it cannot continue to rely solely on the private market. We also need real investments in public, co-operative, and non-profit housing that prioritize people, not profit, and deliver homes Ontarians can actually afford, so that we are not relying on a single approach to deliver the homes people need.”
